“How could this happen again?” That was the question asked on “Good Morning America”.
Suffice it to say, the next few days of media retrospectives will include all kinds of psychoanalysis of the student. Although the most recent shooter was a male, females have also gone on deadly rampages. There will be a search for a pattern. Fingers will be pointed at what the killer read, what the killer watched, who the killer idolized, who the killer despised.
However, there will be one direction that fingers will not be pointed: at the faculty and the climate they’ve created on campus.
Think about it. Going to school nowadays must be a bummer, for the most part.
You have the notion drummed into your little head that the world is coming to an end because you left your dorm light on while you went to the bathroom. The curse of “man-made” global warming is something their professors claim will come to fruition during their students’ lifetime.
All the bad stuff will affect them and their kids.
You have some women’s studies departments that push the idea that men still seek to keep females barefoot and pregnant. The idea could be pushed, depending on the intensity of the professor, that all men are capable of rape. Female students will find it very difficult to trust any man she meets, and most male students will find themselves resentful of being lumped in with those who are disrespectful of women.
How does a guy ask a girl out on a date, under those circumstances? He doesn’t know if she’ll say “yes”, “no”, or scream sexual harassment. The result: Tension and all it takes is one instance of date rape or a false accusation to create a toxic atmosphere throughout the entire campus.
While few to none of them have to fight it, students have been taught to hate the war and those we task to run it.
